Scoreboard Detection for Basketball

Basketball Scoreboard Detection lets BallerCam detect the physical scoreboard in the gym and display it as a live overlay on your stream. Instead of entering the score manually, BallerCam captures the visible scoreboard from the camera view and places it on screen for viewers. The overlay updates automatically as the physical scoreboard changes.

How it works

At a high level, when a stream is being set up, the BallerCam detection algorithm looks for the scoreboard within the field of view. If it finds the scoreboard, it crops that portion of the image and uses it as the on-screen scoreboard overlay. This means the stream shows the actual scoreboard from the venue, rather than a manually entered score.

How to use Basketball Scoreboard Detection

Start your live stream as usual. Make sure the physical scoreboard is visible in the camera view so long as it doesn't compromise the BallerCam's ability to capture the full court. Then tap Detect Scoreboard. While BallerCam scans the feed, you will see a "Detecting Scoreboard..." message. If detection succeeds, a scoreboard preview will appear and the scoreboard overlay will be added to the stream. You can then adjust the overlay settings if needed.

Managing the scoreboard overlay

Scoreboard settings can also be managed from a secondary scorekeeper device in Game Settings. From there, a user can turn the physical scoreboard overlay on or off, view the current scoreboard preview, refresh the preview image, and change the overlay position or size. Position options are Top Left, Top Center, and Top Right. Size options are Small, Medium, and Large. Changes sync to the filming device in real time.

What to do if the detection does not work

If BallerCam cannot find the scoreboard, you will see this message: "Could not find the scoreboard. Please make sure it is visible in the camera view." After a few seconds, the app returns to the ready state so you can try again. In most cases, the first thing to check is whether the scoreboard is clearly visible within the camera frame. Keep in mind this is still an experimental feature, so don't expect it to work 100% of the time.

Important limitations to know

Basketball Scoreboard Detection is currently available on iOS only. The scoreboard must be visible in the camera frame for detection to work. The feature does not use OCR to read or interpret individual score values. It simply displays the scoreboard image itself as an overlay. Multiple scoreboards are also not supported at this time.

Additional notes

Detection runs on the filming device and is designed to complete in under 5 seconds, with a 10-second timeout. After detection, the overlay is turned on by default, with Top Left as the default position and Medium as the default size.
