BallerCam is designed to be flexible. We understand you won’t always be able to set up perfectly at midfield, or exactly a certain distance back from the sideline. Sometimes you’ll have limited space, bad angles, or a crowded area — and that’s okay.
One of the best things about BallerCam is that it can adapt to real-world setups. We’ve trained our system to perform well across a variety of locations and camera heights — and with every game filmed, it keeps getting smarter.
That said, certain setups will deliver much better results, especially for AI panning and ball tracking. The closer you can get to these recommended setups, the more consistent your production quality will be.
Why Setup Matters
Your camera height, distance from the sideline, and the angle of your tilt adapter all work together. For example:
- If you set up too low, the camera will have trouble consistently tracking the ball because it will be blocked by players (this is called an “occlusion”).
- If you set up too far to the side, parts of the field may be missed or the perspective may limit tracking accuracy.
Although you can sometimes use BallerCam on a flat surface like a scorer’s table, using a tripod is highly recommended for best results.
Setup Recommendations by Sport
⚽ Soccer – Optimal Setup
- Left/Right: 0-15 feet from midfield
- Distance from Sideline: ~10 feet back
- Camera Height: 10-15 feet
- Lower end (10 ft) is fine for 7v7
- Higher end (15 ft) recommended for 11v11
- Lower end (10 ft) is fine for 7v7
- Tilt Angle: 15-30 degrees (use your judgment based on height and distance)
- Additional Tip: Being higher helps the AI track the ball better with fewer obstructions.
🏀 Basketball – Optimal Setup
- Left/Right: 0-15 feet from midcourt
- Distance from Sideline: 2-10 feet back
- Camera Height: 5-10 feet
- Tilt Angle: 0-15 degrees (adjust based on your height and distance)
- Additional Tips:
- Set up on the side of the court with less foot traffic in front of you.
- Face the scoreboard or scorer’s table to enable potential auto scoreboard detection.

🏐 Volleyball (Sideline Setup – AI Panning)
- Left/Right: 0-10 feet from center of the net
- Distance from Sideline: 6-10 feet back
- Camera Height: 7-12 feet
- Tilt Angle: 10-25 degrees
- Additional Tip: Adjust tilt based on your tripod height and distance back for best framing.
🏐 Volleyball (Baseline Setup – Static Shot)
- Left/Right: Anywhere along the baseline (closer to the middle is ideal)
- Camera Height: 6-10 feet
- Tilt Angle: 0-15 degrees
- Additional Tips:
- Baseline filming does not use AI panning — this is a fixed, static view.
- Face the scoreboard or scorer’s table to enable potential auto scoreboard detection.

Tripod Stability and Pro Tips
- Always stabilize your tripod. Use:
- Weighted sand or water bags
- Outdoor stakes for grass setups
- Weighted sand or water bags
- Fully extend your tripod legs so the horizontal support bars are parallel to the ground — this is the most stable position.
- Never leave an unweighted tripod unattended.
- Test your tripod heights in advance:
- Many creators use two baseline settings:
- “Two lower poles fully extended”
- “All three poles fully extended” (maximum height)
- “Two lower poles fully extended”
- Consider marking your preferred heights with a paint pen for fast setup consistency at future games.

Summary:
- BallerCam is flexible, but best results come from getting as close to these recommendations as possible.
- Tripod stability is critical.
- Setup preferences may vary based on your filming environment and sport type.
