BallerCam's Player role gives eligible athletes a way to join their team, connect their account to an Athlete Profile, and access team features based on their permissions.
BallerCam can also use trusted roster information to help match Players to the correct athlete, automatically approve eligible matches, and protect Athlete Profiles from conflicting ownership claims.
This guide explains how the Player role, Athlete Profile claims, approvals, and permissions work.
🏃 Who Can Join as a Player?
The Player role is available for teams with athletes age 13 and older, including Adult teams.
During registration, BallerCam checks the Player's birthdate to determine eligibility.
- Players who are exactly 13 years old are eligible.
- Players under 13 are not eligible for the Player role.
- Birthdate information remains private.
👤 Joining a Team as a Player
What happens after selecting the Player role depends on whether the team already has an uploaded roster and whether BallerCam can match the Player to an existing roster entry.
✅ Joining a Team With an Uploaded Roster
If the team has an uploaded roster, BallerCam can match the Player’s account to an existing athlete.
For automatic matching, both of these requirements must be met:
- The Player’s first name and last name match the roster entry.
- Either the Player’s email address or verified phone number matches the contact information on that roster entry.
A matching email address or phone number alone is not enough; both names must also match.
When an exact trusted match is found:
- Team membership can be automatically approved.
- The athlete is automatically followed.
- Athlete Profile ownership still requires the team Creator's approval.
- Automatic team membership approval does not remove a pending Athlete Profile claim.
💡 Tip: Keep each Player’s first name, last name, email address, and phone number accurate on the roster. Players should use matching information on their BallerCam account.
🔎 If BallerCam Cannot Find an Exact Match
If the Player’s first or last name does not match, or neither their email address nor verified phone number matches the roster entry, BallerCam cannot automatically match the account to that athlete.
The Player will see:
Which Player Are You?
The Player selects the roster entry that belongs to them.
After selecting an athlete:
- Team membership remains pending.
- The Athlete Profile claim remains pending.
- The team Creator must review and approve the request.
If there are multiple possible matches, BallerCam does not automatically select an athlete. This helps prevent the wrong account from being connected to an Athlete Profile.
➕ Joining a Team Without an Uploaded Roster
If the team does not already have an uploaded roster, the Player is taken directly to:
Add Yourself
Available account information, such as the Player's name and contact details, can be prefilled.
BallerCam then creates the necessary:
- Roster entry
- Athlete Profile ownership request
- Team association
- BallerCam favorite
Because the roster entry was created by a joining member rather than coming from trusted uploaded-roster information, Creator approval is still required for membership.
If the Creator joins their own team as a Player and there was no uploaded roster, their roster entry, ownership, team association, and favorite are created automatically.
👤 Claiming an Athlete Profile
Eligible confirmed Players can connect their BallerCam account to their Athlete Profile by selecting:
Claim Profile
Athlete Profile ownership requires the team Creator's approval, even when the Player's names and contact information match the roster. While the claim is waiting for approval, the Athlete Profile displays Claim Pending.
After approval, the Athlete Profile owner can select Edit and update permitted player information.
✅ How Creator Approval Works
Team membership can be automatically approved when the Player's first and last names match the roster entry and either their email address or verified phone number also matches.
Athlete Profile ownership still requires Creator approval. If team membership and the linked Athlete Profile claim are both pending, one Creator approval covers both:
For Player requests, one Creator approval covers both:
- Team membership
- The linked Athlete Profile claim
After approval, the team roster, Global Home, Athlete Profile, and pending states update automatically.
🔐 Athlete Profile Ownership Protection
BallerCam protects Athlete Profiles that are already owned.
If an athlete is already owned by another user:
- Another user cannot claim that athlete.
- The athlete cannot be reassigned through another Player claim.
- Claim Profile is hidden for other users.
This prevents competing ownership claims from being created for the same athlete.
🔗 Removing Your Athlete Profile Link
Players can remove their connection to an Athlete Profile by going to:
More → Remove Link
After the link is removed:
- Edit access is removed.
- Claim Pending is removed, if applicable.
- Athlete Profile ownership becomes inactive.
- BallerCam does not immediately recreate the ownership automatically.
- The Player can explicitly claim the Athlete Profile again later when eligible.
Note: Removing your Athlete Profile link is different from simply unfollowing an athlete.
⚙️ Player Permissions
The Players section is available for teams aged 13U and older.
Players begin with the following default permissions:
| Permission | Default |
|---|---|
| Keep Score | ✅ Enabled |
| Film | ❌ Disabled |
| Manage Members | ❌ Disabled |
| Manage Roster | ❌ Disabled |
The team Creator can customize a Player's permissions when needed.
Custom Player permissions remain in place after refreshing the app or signing in again.
The Creator keeps their existing permissions, including scorekeeping, regardless of the default permissions assigned to Players.
👥 Players on Multiple Teams
A Player may belong to more than one team.
When the same athlete appears on multiple teams, BallerCam can group those team associations under a single Athlete Profile, with a separate tab for each team.
This helps keep the athlete's different team memberships organized without requiring a separate Athlete Profile for each team.
🧑 Adult Teams
Adult teams have a simplified experience because Parent/Guardian functionality does not apply.
For Adult teams:
- Parent/Guardian is hidden.
- Players joining without an uploaded roster go directly to Add Yourself.
- Parent-related sections are removed from People, Roles & Permissions, Edit Player, and Athlete Profile.
- Parent contact fields are hidden when editing an Adult athlete.
- Team invitations use Invite Players language.
- Parent-specific invitation actions are removed.
- The Athlete Profile invite action is hidden when the current user already owns the athlete.
✅ Best Practices
For the smoothest Player and Athlete Profile experience:
- Keep roster contact information accurate and up to date.
- Use individual Player email and phone information when available.
Make sure each Player’s account uses the same first and last names as their roster entry, along with a matching email address or verified phone number.
- Review pending Player requests carefully when automatic matching is unavailable.
- Confirm that the Player selected the correct athlete when using Which Player Are You?
- Review Player permissions to make sure each Player has the appropriate level of access.
- Avoid creating duplicate Athlete Profiles.
- Remember that an Athlete Profile already owned by another user cannot be reassigned through another claim.
✅ Key Reminders
- The Player role is available for athletes age 13 and older.
Automatic matching requires matching first and last names, plus either a matching email address or verified phone number.
Team membership is automatically approved when these matching requirements are met.
- If no exact match is found, the Player may use Which Player Are You? and wait for Creator approval.
- Players joining without an uploaded roster use Add Yourself.
- Claim Profile lets eligible Players connect their account to their Athlete Profile.
- Claim Pending means the profile request is waiting for approval.
Athlete Profile ownership requires Creator approval, even when team membership is automatically approved. If both requests are pending, one Creator approval can approve both.
- Existing Athlete Profile ownership is protected from competing claims.
- Players have Keep Score enabled by default, while Film, Manage Members, and Manage Roster are disabled by default.
- Players associated with multiple teams can use a single Athlete Profile with separate team tabs.
- Adult teams do not use Parent/Guardian functionality.
